Lunch Program News:
Every Bite Counts! Making the Most of Our Food
As we continue celebrating Farm to School Month, today we're talking about something that affects all of us — food waste!
A lot of time, work, and resources go into growing, raising, transporting, and preparing our food. When food gets thrown away, all that hard work goes to waste, too.
Here at Sanborn Central, we encourage our Blackhawks to take what they'll eat and come back for more if they're still hungry. It's a simple way to help reduce waste while making sure our students get enough to eat.
Today's Blackhawk Challenge
At dinner tonight, talk about ways your family can waste a little less food.
Maybe it's saving leftovers for another meal, using fruits and vegetables before they spoil, or starting with a smaller portion and taking seconds if you're still hungry.
Can your family come up with ONE way to reduce food waste this week?
Small changes can make a big difference, and it's another way we can show appreciation for the people who help put food on our tables!

Monday, November 9th - FAFSA Night at 7:00 PM in Mrs. Gassman's room
Join Mrs. L Gassman for FAFSA Night on Monday, November 9th at 7PM in Mrs. Gassman's room. Learn about what FAFSA is and how FAFSA can help provide grants, work-study, federal student loans and state & college based aid.
Reminder that all juniors and seniors have 2 excused absences for college/career exploration each year! I really encourage them to go on college tours and to go job shadowing. However, they need to be responsible and get their assignments ahead of time and have their parents/guardians call in their absence.
Hi Parents/Guardians,
I spoke with our juniors this morning about an exciting opportunity available through Central Electric Cooperative! High school juniors have the opportunity to apply for the National Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., June 17–23, 2027.
This is a great leadership and educational experience where students can learn about our nation’s government, electric cooperatives, and rural electrification while exploring some of Washington, D.C.’s most famous landmarks. Highlights include the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, and a riverboat cruise on the Potomac River.
Eligibility requirements:
Students must be high school juniors during the 2026–2027 school year.
Students must permanently reside in Aurora, Brule, Buffalo, Davison, Hanson, Jerauld, Miner, or Sanborn County.
Applications must include a letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach, 4-H advisor, or another adult who is not a family member.
Selected students will need signed parental consent from both parents or legal guardians.
Central Electric will select four students from its service area, with no more than one student selected per county.
Application deadline: December 10, 2026. Selected students will be notified by December 31, 2026.
I encourage eligible juniors to apply for this opportunity! It would be a wonderful chance to develop leadership skills, meet other students, and experience our nation's capital.
On January 11th and 12th we will be having internet safety presentations for grades PreK-12. These will be by each grade level, so they are age appropriate. There will also be a parent session on the evening of January 11th. More information to come later regarding this.
