Lunch Program News:
FFVP Week: Be a Brave Taster!
Have you ever looked at a fruit or vegetable and decided you didn't like it before you even tasted it?
We probably all have!
As we continue celebrating Farm to School Month, today we're encouraging our Blackhawks to be a little adventurous with their food.
One of the great things about our Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is that students have opportunities to experience different fruits and vegetables. Some are familiar favorites, while others might be something they've never tried before.
Today's Challenge: Be a Brave Taster!
We're challenging our Blackhawks and their families to try something new!
It doesn't have to be anything unusual or expensive. Maybe it's a different color of bell pepper, a kiwi, fresh broccoli, or a fruit you've walked past at the grocery store.
Before taking a bite, have your student explore it using their senses.
- Look: What color and shape is it?
- Feel: Is it smooth, bumpy, soft, or firm?
- Smell: Does it have a strong smell?
- Taste: Is it sweet, sour, crunchy, or juicy?
What If They Don't Like It?
That's okay!
Trying a new food doesn't mean you have to love it. Sometimes it takes several opportunities before a food becomes a favorite.
We want our students to understand that being willing to explore new foods is something to be proud of.
Let's Hear From Our Blackhawks!
Ask your student: What's one fruit or vegetable you were surprised you actually liked?
We'd love to hear their answers!

Fresh Fruits, Fresh Vegetables & New Experiences!
It’s another week of Farm to School Month, and this week we’re turning our attention to something our younger Blackhawks get to experience right here at Sanborn Central — the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program!
Our FFVP gives students in Pre-K through 8th grade an opportunity to enjoy a fresh fruit or vegetable snack during the school day three days each week.
But this program is about more than simply providing a snack.
One of our favorite parts is giving students the chance to experience fruits and vegetables they may not normally choose — or may have never tried before!
Why Try New Foods?
Kids don't always love something the first time they taste it — and that's okay!
Seeing, smelling, touching and tasting different foods are all part of learning about them. The goal isn't for every Blackhawk to love every fruit or vegetable we serve. We simply want them to be willing to give it a try.
Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to learn what different fruits and vegetables look like, where they come from and even a few fun facts about them.
This Week's Challenge
This week we're challenging our Blackhawks — and their families — to be a little adventurous!
Can you try ONE fruit or vegetable this week that you've never tried before?
Or, if you've tried them all, give something another chance that you thought you didn't like!
You might just surprise yourself.
We'll be sharing more throughout the week with some fun activities that you can try at home.

Lunchroom Update: A La Carte Purchases
We wanted to share a quick update with families regarding a la carte purchases and food leaving the lunchroom.
Recently, we have seen an increase in students purchasing multiple a la carte items, such as chips and snacks, to take with them when they leave the lunchroom. In addition to adding up quickly on student lunch accounts, food being taken from the lunchroom can also create concerns with spills, wrappers, and cleanliness on our buses.
Moving forward, students in grades 3–5 will be limited to one a la carte item per day, and food will need to be eaten in the lunchroom rather than taken with them when they leave.
We want families to know that this limit applies specifically to a la carte purchases. It does not include seconds of the main meal or our salad bar.
We strongly encourage students to take advantage of the salad bar! It is included with their meal, and students are welcome to return to the salad bar for additional servings while they are eating lunch. We want our students to have plenty to eat and encourage them to choose from the variety of fruits, vegetables, and other options available each day.
Students in grades P–8 also have the opportunity to participate in our Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) three afternoons each week. Through this program, students receive a fresh fruit or vegetable snack during the school day, providing another opportunity for additional nourishment while also introducing students to a variety of healthy foods.
Our goal with this change is not to limit the amount of food available to our students. Instead, we want to encourage good choices, keep lunch account charges manageable for families, and help keep our school and buses clean.
Thank you to our families for your understanding and support. We appreciate your help as we work together to make lunchtime a positive experience for all of our students!

Reminder that all juniors and seniors have 2 excused absences for college/career exploration each year! I really encourage them to go on college tours and to go job shadowing. However, they need to be responsible and get their assignments ahead of time and have their parents/guardians call in their absence.

Because students need sponsorship from a current legislator and several application materials, interested students should begin the process soon.
Students and families can find additional information and application materials through the South Dakota Legislature/Legislative Research Council. https://sdlegislature.gov/Students/Page
Why should a student serve as a page?
Not only is this opportunity an excellent experience for students to see government in action and learn how laws are made, but it also looks great on a resume and scholarship applications! It gives students the opportunity to meet legislators and students across South Dakota. This experience can be valuable for all students, but especially students interested in political science, government, law, education, journalism, communications, business, public service, or leadership.
If your child is interested in this opportunity and didn't let me know today, they still have time to get an application from me.
