The MS Updates have been uploaded to our Google Drive.

Today’s highlight is on another staff member who is in her first year at Sanborn Central – Ms. Evenson.   She has degrees from Willow Lake and SDSU and has two younger siblings.  Ms. Evenson has always lived on a farm and loves the outdoors and treasures the time she spends there with “Oakley”, her Australian Sheperd Border Collie.  She chose to be a teacher because she wants to make an impact on student lives.  She enjoys seeing the “Light Come On” when a student finally understands how things work together.  Each day Ms. Evenson looks forward to learning along with her students.  She feels they bring so many different levels of thinking that are new to other classmates and herself.  Ms. Evenson enjoys sports and it makes no difference if she is playing or watching.  On her days off you may find her reading or baking.  Ms. Evenson, we are so glad that you chose Sanborn Central to be a part of your career!

There is a benefit Pancake / Sausage feed on Saturday, February 1st, from 8-2 PM at the Community Center in Woonsocket for Lance Zell whom has melanoma and is currently in treatment.  A Silent Auction will also be held.  Lance is the son of Dick and Joyce Zell.

Periodically we will be highlighting our wonderful teachers at Sanborn Central.  To kick off we will highlight Ms. Farrell-Poncelet who is in her first year of teaching MS language arts.  Ms. Farrell-Poncelet graduated from Madison Central and DSU.  When she graduated high school, she vowed that she would never be a teacher.  However, she soon discovered that she really enjoyed watching and being a part of the lives of youth as they learn and create new things.  Each day she enjoys the interaction with the students and working with them to find new ways to approach topics.  The students are a wealth of information in their own right!  Ms. Farrell-Poncelet has spent every summer from birth to 21 at a campground in northern Minnesota.  This makes sense as she loves to be outside and specifically at a lake fishing.  Ms. Farrell-Poncelet – thank you for choosing to be a part of Rebel Country!

A clarification from yesterday – it’s Coach Rick Olsen that was inducted into the 281 Hall of Fame!

From Mr. Gross: For the 2014 FFA Spring (Production) Career Development Event season, FFA Members will have to register/sign up with Mr. Gross prior to the event to be able to attend.  This will help Mr. Gross to plan accordingly for what will be needed for the event. Students who register and then find themselves unable to attend because of ineligibility, foreseeable conflicts, oversleeping, etc. will be expected to reimburse the chapter their registration costs (a minimum of $5, may be higher depending on CDE) and will lose 3% of their earned State Convention points.  At the time of registration, students will be made aware of the cost they will have to reimburse the chapter should they not attend.  Remember, FFA members need to attend AT LEAST 2, preferably 3 local CDEs.  Lastly, please note that three of the local CDEs happen on the same colored days.  This is unfortunate but unavoidable.  That being said, it will take great communication and hard work to stay on top of missed assignments.  Please plan ahead!  More info can be found at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxqWDgwTHOqeSXpiZndvWXFKZXc/edit?usp=sharing

MS Homework Club will meet tonight!

The Rebels would like to welcome Ashtyn Johnson Slicer to our kindergarten class today!

The Ladies host Hanson today with the JH tip off at 5:15 at Sanborn Central.  Go Blackhawks! (Daneks)

Boys BB practice will be moved to Woonsocket today due to the girls C-game.

5/6th Grade Girls BB practice will be moved from Woonsocket to Sanborn Central today.

The boys bb team played in the Hanson Classic on Saturday and defeated Centerville in a wild contest 56-55. Helping the cause were:  Jaedyn Ford 2 pts, Davion Brooks 12 pts and 7 reb, Dillon Moore 12 pts, Tucker Kingsbury 22 pts and 6 reb, Jalen Larson 3 pts, Jarid Bechen 1 pt, Brady Tiede 4 pts and 12 reb. FG 20-50 40%  FT 11-12  92%  3pt 5-9 56%  WE out rebounded Cent 34-25. The boys record now stands at 8-2 on the year.  Coach Olson’s comments:  We played really well the first half in building a 15 point lead.  At halftime we talked that Centerville will make shots going forward as O’Malley is an all-state player and he showed it the 2nd half.  We just missed too many point-blank shots to keep scoring at our end to keep the margin comfortable.  Mix that with some costly turnovers and it looked ugly at times.  But that is why we are excited to play in the Classic as the boys get to play in front of a big crowd and they still made plays down the stretch to get a victory.

The St Charles Knights of Columbus FT contest was held Sunday at the SC gym.  Winners were as follows:
9 year olds:  Noah Wormstadt and Teya Moody
10 yr old:  Mason Moody and Shania Cornelius
11yr old:   Tater Moody and Katie Schmit
12 yr old:   Alex Wormstadt and Madi Moody
                13 yr old:   Austin Schmit
14 yr old:   Shaun Snedeker and Maddie Vermeulen
These winners will advance to the District level at a later date.  Thanks to all who participated.

The Sanborn Central one-act play cast will present the play Stoplight on Wednesday January 29 at Huron High School. Their performance will be at 2:15.  The cast is made up of Jessica Schmit, Hannah Spelbring, Kelsey Henson and Brandon Jessen.  Breanne Brandenburg is the crew.  The play is under the direction of Mrs. Danek.

Stats from the 281 Championship game last week: Blackhawks 51   Highmore-Harrold 42    Leaders: Shelby Selland  14 points and 11 rebounds; Marissa Weber  12 points; Rachel Selland  10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists; Morgan Selland 10 points and 4 steals; and Myah Selland 5 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

On January 31 thru February 2, Mitchell is hosting a class 'E" Coaching License clinic. This type of license is for coaching U10, U12 and U14 players. The curriculum focuses on the development of the player and takes the player from being technically oriented to refining those techniques and applying them to game situations. This clinic is being taught by DWU Men's Soccer coach Jeremy Tosaya.  Coach Jeremy is an "A" Licensed Coach which is the highest level you can achieve.  We are very lucky to be able to have this in Mitchell AND to have it taught by an "A" level instructor!!  The course will run from Friday evening, all day Saturday and a portion of Sunday AT DWU.  The Mitchell Soccer Association is looking at our current amount of teams to double for the spring season.  We will be in need of coaches!!  We like to have two coaches per team.  The fee for the clinic is $60 per person.  If you are interested in becoming a coach and wanting to attend, please let me know by Sunday January 19. I know this is late getting into our announcements – but please contact her if you are interested.  MITCHELL SOCCER ASSOCIATION WILL PAY THE $60 FOR YOU TO ATTEND AND BECOME LICENSED!!!   Please let me know if you have any questions!!  Jodie Cain-Lambert - Mitchell Soccer Association - 605-999-3810

Blue Day

This week is School Board Recognition Week.  Our children benefit every day from the leadership of our local school board.  Today we will highlight Troy Olson, a 10 year member of the board.  Troy graduated from Artesian High School where he played trombone in band, for some reason he believes the director, Mrs. Whitney, destroyed the trombone after he graduated.  He also attended SD School of Mines and SDSU. Currently Troy farms when he’s not reading L’Amour books (over 140 read thus far). Troy has always been excited in helping educate young minds - he gets great satisfaction in seeing our students succeed and knowing that he had a small part in it. Troy would like to continue allowing our students to have the tools needed to keep up with the ever-changing technologies of today as well as have the building debt paid off early.  Something Troy sees as a huge accomplishment during his time on the board was helping to get all students under one roof and seeing the district band together throughout the building process.  Troy, we thank you for making the commitment to serve Sanborn Central students, staff, and patrons!

Great job Blackhawks on your victories last night.  From Coach Dean - The JV Girls Blackhawks defeated Kimball/White Lake 37-30. Leading the Blackhawks was Tayla Weber with 21 points. Abby Doering grabbed 6 boards. Bailey Moody had 4 assist and 3 steals.  The Blackhawk Boys Varsity BB team defeated conference foe Kimball- White Lake last night by a score of 78-59 to stay undefeated at 6-0. Helping the cause was Dillon Moore scoring 17 points, Brady Tiede with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyler Krueger with 10 points. We were 34/61 from the floor for 56%.  The JV team won 46-27.  Coach Olson’s comments: It was a good win for the boys.  We weren’t as focused as we would have liked to be, especially on the defensive end, but the boys continued to play hard and came out with the victory.

281 Conference Pink Night
Let’s get the entire arena covered in pink!

From South Dakota Voices for Children:  I write as we at SDVC are putting together our upcoming Children’s Day at the Capitol on February 4. One of the aspects of Children’s Day is to have some display items emphasizing children. We are developing banners featuring children from across SD to emphasize the diversity found in our children and that all communities must address the needs of children. I write to ask if any of your families are headed toward Sioux Falls in the days ahead and would be willing to have their son or daughter (ages birth to 18) be photographed to be used in the banner. The banner would read something like “Greg B, age 14, Artesian”.  If you know of someone who might be interested to contact me directly. Thanks for your help. Look forward to seeing you in 2014.

This week is School Board Recognition Week.  Our children benefit every day from the leadership of our local school board.  Today we will feature Brenda Schmit, a graduate of Alpena High School and Dakota State University at Madison.  Brenda was a Wildcat cheerleader before she became a "Retro Cheerleader".  Brenda is currently employed as a medical coder and bookkeeper.  Brenda is serving her 8th year on the Sanborn Central School Board.  When asked why she chose to be on the board, her response was that she wanted to help in the decisions to make our district great as a whole and provide the best possible education and environment for the children in the district. Brenda feels that her greatest accomplishment so far is the formation of the consolidation that created the Blackhawks.  In the future Brenda hopes to continue to keep a balance of great education while meeting the financial struggles of a small district. Brenda we thank you for making the commitment to serve Sanborn Central students, staff, and patrons!
