March 26, 2020 Important Information

Attention all Sanborn Central Community Members:

With all that has been going on during this trying time, we would like to take a moment to give you all a “pat on the back!”  The work that everyone is putting toward making the best of a difficult situation is nothing short of inspiring.  Our staff is continuing their work to deliver the most complete educational experience as possible in this alternative environment.  Your continued willingness to engage and help the students, though not easy, will be vital to their successful completion of assignments while they are home.  Please utilize the students’ teachers, asking them any questions you may have during this time.

A few updates regarding other school business.  If you were unaware, the State Department of Education has been granted a waiver to not administer any standardized tests this spring in grades 3 - 8 and 11.  This was a national decision as well.  A final decision on spring activities, like FFA, band and chorus competitions as well as track and golf will be made by the South Dakota High School Activities Association this week.  However, it seems unlikely that those activities will occur.  Spring field trips will not be able to be taken.  If we do come back to school, the time in the classrooms will need to be utilized for instructional time.  Our 2020 Prom and Graduation ceremonies are POSTPONED for the time being, with a hope that they will be able to be rescheduled once/if we are given the “OK” to do so.  We will work hard to try and have these events if possible.

Regarding the upcoming weeks, we have discussed the situation and will proceed using the following process.  Starting Monday, March 30th and every subsequent Monday through the month of April (6th, TUESDAY the 14th, 20th, and 27th), the school will be “open” from 8:00 am – 11:00 am.  During this time, any materials the staff has for their students will be available for pick up.  Also, the district will be providing two lunches and one breakfast to each student, also available for pick up.  This is also the appropriate time for any assignments that are needed to be returned for correction to be brought to the school.  We will NOT allow anyone other than the staff members into the school building.  The collection of assignments and the dispersal of meals and materials will be done curbside, at the east entrance (Gym/Commons).  The workers will come to you and ask any questions about what may be needed from them, and then bring the required items, including meals, to you.  To ensure that this is a seamless process, the following time assignments are asked to be followed:  If your last name begins with an A through H, your time is from 8 – 9.  Last names from letter I through P will be from 9 – 10.  And those with the letter Q through Z will be from 10 – 11.  If there are any issues with the times assigned to your family, please call 605-495-4183 or email justin.siemsen@k12.sd.us and other arrangements can be made.

Our continued efforts, as a community will undoubtedly make this difficult time much easier to handle.  As a district, it is our hope that the students can get the needed components of their classes.  Along with that, we also hope that this time allows your families to spend quality time together.
Mr. Siemsen
Superintendent

March 25, 2020 from Mrs. Vermeulen

Mrs. Vermeulen wants to share this with you - the link will take you to their homepage.
https://sdsfec.org/news/daily-digest-helps-families-guide-home-learning/

With schools cancelled across South Dakota, families are now being asked to guide and support their child’s education at home. While there are many resources, apps, and tools available, parents and family members have expressed feeling overwhelmed in their home learning adventures.

The South Dakota Statewide Family Engagement Center (SD SFEC), with the help of the Community, Family, and Special Services Division of Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, is creating a daily, simple and useful tool to help families feel prepared to support their children in learning at home. Each day, SD SFEC shares a Daily Digest. This short guide highlights quick and easy activities and free resources that families can use to engage their children in learning while they are home.

The Daily Digests include virtual tours, ways to celebrate the day, physical activity ideas, online learning opportunities for students, and links to resources for parents and caregivers.

Additionally, SD SFEC is honoring South Dakota with daily lessons about unique locations across the state. The Daily Digests include a Road Trip Across South Dakota section, which features a new stop each day for kids to explore and learn about places in South Dakota, like Badlands National Park and the Dignity statue near Chamberlain.

On another note, this morning with the blog from Mrs. Foxley, I didn't give instructions as to how to get to her web site so sent out a 2nd blog.   For future reference - Go to our web site - www.sanborncentral.com and in the upper right click on menu.  An entire list of available pages will appear (might be surprised what you will find).  Mrs. Foxley's is located under the High School tab.

March 25th - Mrs. Foxley

Today Wednesday, March 25, Mrs. Foxley will be doing Zoom sessions for any student that wants to join! She will be covering self-care strategies and coping skills as well as just checking in with whoever joins. Today these times will be for both Sanborn Central and Woonsocket students as a trial run! The link to join the Zoom session will be on my website on the "ACES at Home" tab. Please look for what time you should join:

March 22, 2020 Update

Attention all students and families of Sanborn Central School District:

We want to take this time to remind everyone of the plan to pick up all your student's school materials and two sack lunches on Monday, March 23rd.  The times associated with pick up are in the list below:

9:00 - 10:00  -  High School Students
10:00 - 11:00  -  Middle School Students
11:00 - 12:00  -  PreK - 2nd grade
12:00 - 1:00  -  3rd grade - 5th grade

Reminders about the pick up:  If you have students in multiple grade levels, it is ok to come and pick their materials and lunches up at a single time.  We are going to do our best to limit needed access into the hallways, but if your student absolutely needs to get to their lockers, we will allow that, but it will be for a short time and the amount of students allowed at a given time will be monitored (PLEASE BE PAITENT).  If you do not wish to enter the school to pick up your student's materials and lunches, please call the school (495-4183) and let us know.  Someone will then bring your child's materials out to you.  If you have classwork to be turned in from BEFORE we had the school closure, please let your teachers know when you are here for pick up.

Reminders for students:  Please make sure you are checking and responding to your teachers during this time to make sure you are receiving the classwork.  If this is an issue, please let someone at the school, either Mr. Siemsen or Mrs. Vermeulen, know and we can help make sure you get what is needed.  Do not procrastinate do your assigned work.  If we are out of school longer, more assignments will be given and it will start to pile up and become overwhelming!  Just do a little each day and you will have no problem completing it.  If you have any questions, please contact your teachers and they will get back to you as soon as possible.

Once we have been given guidance and information regarding the upcoming weeks regarding schools opening up or not, we will provide those updates via the blog and Facebook page as well as the messages on the phone, email, and text.  We are cautiously optimistic that we will indeed be in school March 30th, as is intended.  However, we will follow all the information given by our governmental leadership.  We have plans in place for providing more work and meals for the students beyond this week, and will provide updates with the plans to all should the need arise.

Please be safe and take care of one another during this difficult time.

Justin Siemsen, Superintendent
Connie Vermeulen, PreK - 8th Principal
