Lunch Program News:
Beef to School Week: How Far Did Your Dinner Travel?
Yesterday we kicked off Beef to School Week by talking about our Beef to School Program and the connection between local agriculture and the food on our students’ lunch trays.
Today, we’re taking Farm to School home!
Family Challenge: How Far Did Your Dinner Travel?
At dinner tonight, have your Blackhawk choose five foods on the table.
Then see what your family can figure out!
  • Where did each food come from?
  • Which food was grown or raised closest to home?
  • Which one traveled the farthest?
  • Do you know someone who grows or raises any of the foods you're eating?
Check packages and labels if you can, make some guesses, and most importantly — talk about it!
There aren't any right or wrong answers. The goal is simply to get kids thinking about something we don't always stop to consider:
Where did our food come from before it reached our plate?
Take It One Step Further!
If you're having beef this week, ask your Blackhawk to think about how many people it takes to get that beef from the farm to your dinner table.
A farmer or rancher is just the beginning! What about the people who process it? Transport it? Sell it? Prepare it?
See how many different jobs your family can come up with.
That's what Farm to School Month is all about — making the connection between the food we eat, the people who produce it, and the communities around us.
Tomorrow we'll have another Beef to School Challenge for our Blackhawks!

Lunchroom Update: A La Carte Purchases
We wanted to share a quick update with families regarding a la carte purchases and food leaving the lunchroom.
Recently, we have seen an increase in students purchasing multiple a la carte items, such as chips and snacks, to take with them when they leave the lunchroom. In addition to adding up quickly on student lunch accounts, food being taken from the lunchroom can also create concerns with spills, wrappers, and cleanliness on our buses.
Moving forward, students in grades 3–5 will be limited to one a la carte item per day, and food will need to be eaten in the lunchroom rather than taken with them when they leave.
We want families to know that this limit applies specifically to a la carte purchases. It does not include seconds of the main meal or our salad bar.
We strongly encourage students to take advantage of the salad bar! It is included with their meal, and students are welcome to return to the salad bar for additional servings while they are eating lunch. We want our students to have plenty to eat and encourage them to choose from the variety of fruits, vegetables, and other options available each day.
Students in grades P–8 also have the opportunity to participate in our Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) three afternoons each week. Through this program, students receive a fresh fruit or vegetable snack during the school day, providing another opportunity for additional nourishment while also introducing students to a variety of healthy foods.
Our goal with this change is not to limit the amount of food available to our students. Instead, we want to encourage good choices, keep lunch account charges manageable for families, and help keep our school and buses clean.
Thank you to our families for your understanding and support. We appreciate your help as we work together to make lunchtime a positive experience for all of our students!

Reminder that all juniors and seniors have 2 excused absences for college/career exploration each year! I really encourage them to go on college tours and to go job shadowing. However, they need to be responsible and get their assignments ahead of time and have their parents/guardians call in their absence.

On January 11th and 12th we will be having internet safety presentations for grades PreK-12. These will be by each grade level, so they are age appropriate. There will also be a parent session on the evening of January 11th. More information to come later regarding this.
Junior and Senior Parents/Guardians,
I wanted to make families aware of an opportunity available to South Dakota high school juniors and seniors - the South Dakota Legislative Page Program. I spoke with the students about this opportunity this morning and gave out applications to interested students.
The program gives students the opportunity to spend time in Pierre during the 2027 legislative session and get a firsthand look at how the South Dakota Legislature operates.
Who is eligible?
  • Current high school juniors and seniors
  • Students from any South Dakota school district may apply
What do pages do?
Pages serve in either the South Dakota House of Representatives or Senate. Their responsibilities may include:
  • Attending committee meetings in the mornings
  • Assisting during House or Senate floor sessions in the afternoons
  • Helping in the Legislative Post Office
  • Assisting legislators as needed
  • Participating in scheduled social and educational activities
  • Answer phones and deliver messages to legislators on a rotational basis
Pay
Pages receive $55 for each legislative day they serve.
Housing
Students are housed with families in Pierre or Fort Pierre if needed, preferably with other page students. Parent/guardian consent is required for pages who make their own arrangements.
Transportation
Pages are responsible for their own transportation to and from work and any other transportation needs while serving in Pierre. Pages are encouraged to go home on the weekend.
When is it?
The 2027 legislative session runs from January 12 through March 31, 2027, with a recess from March 12–30. Students serve during one of five page terms during the main portion of the session. When applying, they will indicate their preference for their 1st through 5th term choice.
1st Term: January 11-22
2nd Term: January 24-February 5
3rd Term: February 7-19
4th Term: February 21-March 4
5th Term: March 7-11
What is required to apply?
Students must:
  • Obtain signed sponsorship approval from a current legislator - student will need to contact a state legislator to obtain their signature for sponsorship. Talk to a legislator and ask for the privilege of them sponsoring you. Any current legislator can sponsor a page.
    • Sanborn County - District 20 - State Legislators
    • Students can email or talk with a legislator on the phone and send a copy of the application to the legislator to sign and send to the Page Advisor, Michelle Deyo-Amende, (email: PageProgram@sdlegislature.gov), and send their own original application separately.
  • Complete the Legislative Page application
  • Submit a cover letter (about yourself, why you are applying, why you should be selected, and what you hope to gain from serving as a page)
  • Have written permission from the school
  • Have written permission from a parent/guardian
  • Provide two letters of recommendation (NOT from family members)
    • If applying to serve in the Senate, your reference letters should be addressed to the President Pro Tempore (Chris Karr)
    • If you are applying to serve in the House, your reference letters should be addressed to the Speaker of the House (Jon Hansen)
Application Deadlines
  • Preferred deadline: October 2, 2026
  • Final deadline: October 16, 2026
*Email completed application materials to PageProgram@sdlegislature.gov
Because students need sponsorship from a current legislator and several application materials, interested students should begin the process soon.
Students and families can find additional information and application materials through the South Dakota Legislature/Legislative Research Council. https://sdlegislature.gov/Students/Page
Why should a student serve as a page?
Not only is this opportunity an excellent experience for students to see government in action and learn how laws are made, but it also looks great on a resume and scholarship applications! It gives students the opportunity to meet legislators and students across South Dakota. This experience can be valuable for all students, but especially students interested in political science, government, law, education, journalism, communications, business, public service, or leadership.
If your child is interested in this opportunity and didn't let me know today, they still have time to get an application from me.
