Middle School Updates
Notes from Mrs. Gassman and the PBIS Team

Good afternoon 11th grade parents and guardians!

I am writing regarding an exciting opportunity for juniors to apply for to earn a free trip to Washington D.C. through Central Electric! I discussed this opportunity with the students yesterday but wanted to share with you as well to encourage your children to apply.

Central Electric is sending up to four high school juniors on a trip to Washington, D.C. The educational journey, hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), takes place June 14-20, 2026.

Students will learn about government, cooperative philosophy and rural electrification in our nation’s capital. Tour highlights include the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Vietnam Memorial and the U.S. Capitol. Students will also participate in a briefing with South Dakota’s Congressional Delegation and a riverboat cruise across the Potomac River.

Applicants must be high school juniors during the 2025-2026 school year who permanently reside in Aurora, Brule, Buffalo, Davison, Hanson, Jerauld, Miner or Sanborn County of South Dakota. They do not need to be cooperative members to apply. Children and legal dependents of cooperative directors and employees are not eligible to participate. The online application should be submitted with an essay and a teacher letter of recommendation.

Juniors selected as Youth Tour delegates must obtain signed parental consent from both parents or legal guardians. Pre-trip forms must be signed by both parents or legal guardians in front of a notary public unless one parent or legal guardian is deceased or no longer has parental rights.

Visit www.centralec.coop/youth-tour to apply or call 1-800-477-2892 to learn more. Applications will be accepted until Dec. 10, 2025.

Dear Senior Parents and Guardians,
I met with the seniors this morning to go over some important items they should be focusing on during November and December. I wanted to share this information with you as well so you can help support your student during this busy time.
  • Dual Credit Registration:
Registration for Spring 2026 dual credit courses is now open. Students can stop by my office anytime I am available to register or ask questions about available courses. The sooner they register the better as courses tend to fill up quickly.
  • Free College Application Month (ends November 30):
Students can apply to any South Dakota college for free through November 30. Encourage your student to take advantage of this opportunity before it ends! Applications can be found on the college's website.
Please encourage your student to stay on top of these deadlines and reach out to me with any questions or for assistance with applications.
Thank you for your continued support as we help your senior prepare for life after graduation!
Warm regards,
Dear 11th Grade Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to share some important information regarding our upcoming state testing for juniors. Beginning this school year, the ACT will replace the previous state test (Smarter Balance) as the required state assessment for 11th-grade students.
We plan to administer the ACT on Tuesday, March 24th, and Wednesday, March 25th. Testing will be split over two days, and all testing will be completed online, as required by the state.
Please avoid scheduling any family vacations or appointments during this week, as attendance during testing is very important. If a student is sick during testing, we will have a make-up testing window.
