Good afternoon 11th grade parents and guardians!
I am writing regarding an exciting opportunity for juniors to apply for to earn a free trip to Washington D.C. through Central Electric! I discussed this opportunity with the students yesterday but wanted to share with you as well to encourage your children to apply.
Central Electric is sending up to four high school juniors on a trip to Washington, D.C. The educational journey, hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), takes place June 14-20, 2026.
Students will learn about government, cooperative philosophy and rural electrification in our nation’s capital. Tour highlights include the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Vietnam Memorial and the U.S. Capitol. Students will also participate in a briefing with South Dakota’s Congressional Delegation and a riverboat cruise across the Potomac River.
Applicants must be high school juniors during the 2025-2026 school year who permanently reside in Aurora, Brule, Buffalo, Davison, Hanson, Jerauld, Miner or Sanborn County of South Dakota. They do not need to be cooperative members to apply. Children and legal dependents of cooperative directors and employees are not eligible to participate. The online application should be submitted with an essay and a teacher letter of recommendation.
Juniors selected as Youth Tour delegates must obtain signed parental consent from both parents or legal guardians. Pre-trip forms must be signed by both parents or legal guardians in front of a notary public unless one parent or legal guardian is deceased or no longer has parental rights.
Visit www.centralec.coop/youth-tour to apply or call 1-800-477-2892 to learn more. Applications will be accepted until Dec. 10, 2025.
- Dual Credit Registration:
Registration for Spring 2026 dual credit courses is now open. Students can stop by my office anytime I am available to register or ask questions about available courses. The sooner they register the better as courses tend to fill up quickly. - Free College Application Month (ends November 30):
Students can apply to any South Dakota college for free through November 30. Encourage your student to take advantage of this opportunity before it ends! Applications can be found on the college's website. - The FAFSA is now open. Completing it sooner rather than later ensures students are considered for the maximum amount of financial aid available.
- Students interested in the Build Dakota Scholarship can begin applying January 1st. Now is the time for students to reach out to potential industry partners if they are interested in sponsorship opportunities. Students must have the Build Dakota application completed by March 31st, as well as the FAFSA as this is a requirement to receive the Build Dakota scholarship.
- Scholarships:
I encourage all seniors to apply for scholarships. I regularly update the scholarship list by month on my website: Sanborn Central Counselor – Scholarships. For the scholarship offered to eligible students from the Sanborn Central Foundation, seniors have the option to choose which semester they would like that scholarship money applied to. Students need to notify a SC Foundation board member if they would like the scholarship applied to a different semester, or else the funds will automatically be dispersed to the student's college in their freshman fall semester. Board Members include Corey Flatten, Megan Wilson, Troy Olson, Stephanie Edwards, Angie Fridley, Harley Moore, and Allison Adema. - Letters of Recommendation:
Students should begin requesting letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches, employers, or other mentors now, so they have them ready for upcoming scholarship applications.
