Middle School Updates
Notes from Mrs. Gassman

Good afternoon 11th grade parents and guardians!

I am writing regarding an exciting opportunity for juniors to apply for to earn a free trip to Washington D.C. through Central Electric! I discussed this opportunity with the students yesterday but wanted to share with you as well to encourage your children to apply.

Central Electric is sending up to four high school juniors on a trip to Washington, D.C. The educational journey, hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), takes place June 14-20, 2026.

Students will learn about government, cooperative philosophy and rural electrification in our nation’s capital. Tour highlights include the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Vietnam Memorial and the U.S. Capitol. Students will also participate in a briefing with South Dakota’s Congressional Delegation and a riverboat cruise across the Potomac River.

Applicants must be high school juniors during the 2025-2026 school year who permanently reside in Aurora, Brule, Buffalo, Davison, Hanson, Jerauld, Miner or Sanborn County of South Dakota. They do not need to be cooperative members to apply. Children and legal dependents of cooperative directors and employees are not eligible to participate. The online application should be submitted with an essay and a teacher letter of recommendation.

I wanted to provide you with more information about the Build Dakota Scholarship, which our sophomores, juniors, and seniors learned about during an informational session at school.
The Build Dakota Scholarship is a full-ride scholarship available to students pursuing high-need technical careers at South Dakota technical colleges (Mitchell Technical College, Lake Area Technical College-Watertown, Western Dakota Tech-Rapid City, and Southeast Technical College-Sioux Falls). The scholarship covers 100% of tuition, fees, books, and tools, and is funded through a partnership between the state of South Dakota and private industry sponsors.
Students who receive the scholarship agree to:
  • Enroll in an approved high-need program at a South Dakota technical college
  • Complete the program
In return, students receive a completely covered technical education with strong job placement opportunities in high-demand fields.
If you would like to learn more, Build Dakota offers a parent and student informational session every Monday at 6:30 PM (Central Time). You can join using the link below:
Build Dakota Monday Informational Session Link:
https://www.builddakotascholarships.com/resources/webinars/
Students can apply between January 1-March 31st of their senior year of high school. Students who find their own industry partner to agree to be their Build Dakota sponsor have an increased likelihood of receiving this scholarship. If students do not find their own industry partner, there is a still a chance they would be chosen by an industry partner when they review all of the Build Dakota applications.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions! I also included an attachment that shows which programs are Build-Dakota eligible.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Gassman
Dear Sophomore Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to inform you that on Monday, March 16th and Tuesday, March 17th 2026, all sophomores will be taking the ACT here at school during the regular school day. I will be administering the exam.
Beginning this spring 2026, the state is requiring all juniors to take the ACT as the official state assessment, replacing the former Smarter Balanced test. In order to best prepare students for this change, we are providing practice opportunities leading up to their junior year. Last year, students took the PreACT 8/9, and this year they will take the full ACT, which is fully paid for by the school.
This sophomore ACT experience is valuable for several reasons:
  • It allows us to better understand each student’s strengths and areas for growth.
  • It helps us provide more individualized academic support before junior year.
  • It reduces test anxiety by giving students exposure to the real testing environment.
Because all sophomores will be testing together, we kindly ask that you avoid scheduling any vacations or appointments on March 16th and 17th. Consistent attendance will ensure a smooth testing experience for all students.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you for your support!

Mrs. Gassman
