QUOTE OF THE DAY:

For me and my family personally, September 11 was a reminder that life is fleeting, impermanent, and uncertain. Therefore, we must make use of every moment and nurture it with affection, tenderness, beauty, creativity, and laughter.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING SYOPSIS:

Mrs. Whitney has provided the following synopsis of last night’s School Board meeting.

Toured the new Upland Colony school building.  What a beautiful building!!!!  A huge thank you to Upland Colony and Mrs. Knigge for the tour and to the Colony for the coffee and cookies!

Meeting began at 7:10.  Approved the agenda with change to #55 (no oath of office) #57 (delete Carrie Grosz and replace with Jenni Greenway, delete $8.85 and replace with $8.25 and delete “at Upland Colony”) and August 13 board minutes with the deletion of Austerman as being present  .

Rachelle Moore and Candace Page-Marten, representing the senior class, asked the board to grant senior privileges with the usual requests and consequences for not abiding by the rules.  Board thanked them for coming and approved senior privileges.  They also gave Rachelle and Candace the first parking spot for seniors for coming to the meeting and representing their class.

Approved the bills and financial report.  Discussion was held and approval was given to the 2013 tax request.  This request stays at the 2012 tax request.

Superintendent Whitney reported that Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for October 8 from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m., bonus points will once again be given to MS and HS students if parents contact the teachers (This can be done also via phone call or e-mail if a parent cannot attend in person or another time can be arranged that is more convenient.); September 25 the juniors and seniors will be going to Fall Planning Days at DWU with representatives from post-secondary schools and military present; fall enrollment of 190 down 9 students from last year; new mobile app up and running; cameras in busses seem to be working well; and Upland Colony has decided to not be a part of the school lunch program due to the massive amount of paperwork and requirements.  Further discussion was held on the new school lunch program requirements and the fact that the older students are hungry and the younger ones are throwing food away.  The paperwork for Joyce is overwhelming even though she’s taken some of it from another source.  Students, parents, and concerned patrons are encouraged to write or contact our Congressmen (John Thune, Tim Johnson, and Kristi Noem) to voice your concerns.  If you need contact information, please call or e-mail Mrs. Whitney.

Mrs. Vermeulen reported on new enrollment figures; MS Student Council members whom were just elected were congratulated; Common Core Standards update; 5/6 BB practice starting with coaches Robin Moody (GBB) and Cheryl Schmit (BBB) from SC; and a HS student volunteering to teach elementary art to one class per week.

Approved the resignation of David Steele as school board member and appointed Kathy Austerman to replace him until a suitable replacement from the former Artesian School District can be found.  Oath of office will be given in October as Kathy was out of town for this meeting.

Approved the level changes for Jill Reimer and Tim McCain from BA/S+15 to BA/S+30.

Approved the contracts for Vickie Fox ($9.05 per/hr) and Jenni Greenway ($8.25 per/hr) as SPED paraeducators.

Approved the resignation of Tracy Moody as 5/6 GBB coach and the contract of Robin Moody as 5/6 GBB coach effective immediately for $625.
