March 26, 2020 Important Information

Attention all Sanborn Central Community Members:

With all that has been going on during this trying time, we would like to take a moment to give you all a “pat on the back!”  The work that everyone is putting toward making the best of a difficult situation is nothing short of inspiring.  Our staff is continuing their work to deliver the most complete educational experience as possible in this alternative environment.  Your continued willingness to engage and help the students, though not easy, will be vital to their successful completion of assignments while they are home.  Please utilize the students’ teachers, asking them any questions you may have during this time.

A few updates regarding other school business.  If you were unaware, the State Department of Education has been granted a waiver to not administer any standardized tests this spring in grades 3 - 8 and 11.  This was a national decision as well.  A final decision on spring activities, like FFA, band and chorus competitions as well as track and golf will be made by the South Dakota High School Activities Association this week.  However, it seems unlikely that those activities will occur.  Spring field trips will not be able to be taken.  If we do come back to school, the time in the classrooms will need to be utilized for instructional time.  Our 2020 Prom and Graduation ceremonies are POSTPONED for the time being, with a hope that they will be able to be rescheduled once/if we are given the “OK” to do so.  We will work hard to try and have these events if possible.

Regarding the upcoming weeks, we have discussed the situation and will proceed using the following process.  Starting Monday, March 30th and every subsequent Monday through the month of April (6th, TUESDAY the 14th, 20th, and 27th), the school will be “open” from 8:00 am – 11:00 am.  During this time, any materials the staff has for their students will be available for pick up.  Also, the district will be providing two lunches and one breakfast to each student, also available for pick up.  This is also the appropriate time for any assignments that are needed to be returned for correction to be brought to the school.  We will NOT allow anyone other than the staff members into the school building.  The collection of assignments and the dispersal of meals and materials will be done curbside, at the east entrance (Gym/Commons).  The workers will come to you and ask any questions about what may be needed from them, and then bring the required items, including meals, to you.  To ensure that this is a seamless process, the following time assignments are asked to be followed:  If your last name begins with an A through H, your time is from 8 – 9.  Last names from letter I through P will be from 9 – 10.  And those with the letter Q through Z will be from 10 – 11.  If there are any issues with the times assigned to your family, please call 605-495-4183 or email justin.siemsen@k12.sd.us and other arrangements can be made.

Our continued efforts, as a community will undoubtedly make this difficult time much easier to handle.  As a district, it is our hope that the students can get the needed components of their classes.  Along with that, we also hope that this time allows your families to spend quality time together.

March 25, 2020 from Mrs. Vermeulen

Mrs. Vermeulen wants to share this with you - the link will take you to their homepage.
https://sdsfec.org/news/daily-digest-helps-families-guide-home-learning/

With schools cancelled across South Dakota, families are now being asked to guide and support their child’s education at home. While there are many resources, apps, and tools available, parents and family members have expressed feeling overwhelmed in their home learning adventures.

The South Dakota Statewide Family Engagement Center (SD SFEC), with the help of the Community, Family, and Special Services Division of Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, is creating a daily, simple and useful tool to help families feel prepared to support their children in learning at home. Each day, SD SFEC shares a Daily Digest. This short guide highlights quick and easy activities and free resources that families can use to engage their children in learning while they are home.

The Daily Digests include virtual tours, ways to celebrate the day, physical activity ideas, online learning opportunities for students, and links to resources for parents and caregivers.

Additionally, SD SFEC is honoring South Dakota with daily lessons about unique locations across the state. The Daily Digests include a Road Trip Across South Dakota section, which features a new stop each day for kids to explore and learn about places in South Dakota, like Badlands National Park and the Dignity statue near Chamberlain.

On another note, this morning with the blog from Mrs. Foxley, I didn't give instructions as to how to get to her web site so sent out a 2nd blog.   For future reference - Go to our web site - www.sanborncentral.com and in the upper right click on menu.  An entire list of available pages will appear (might be surprised what you will find).  Mrs. Foxley's is located under the High School tab.
