Yesterday we held a successful tornado drill. Students followed procedures well and safety protocols were effectively practiced.

Freshmen will be taking the PreACT 8/9 in Mrs. L Gassmans room Tuesday morning (April 14th). This will take all of first block and most likely all of 2^nd block. We will begin right at 8:30 AM. It may go into music block. I will keep all the students until everyone is completed with the exam. The students will be required to attend afternoon classes.

The University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law will be hosting its “Law Camp” via Zoom

Testing

South Dakota Standardized testing will begin with Middle School on Tuesday, April 14th. It will continue through the 17th of April. Testing will resume on April 21st for 8th grade Science.

The PreACT 8/9 that our freshmen are taking this morning is a practice assessment that helps introduce them to the format, timing, and types of questions they’ll see on the ACT. It’s not part of the official ACT testing requirement, but it is aligned to it. The highest possible score they can get is a 30, whereas on the actual ACT the highest score is a 36.

In South Dakota, all juniors are now required to take the ACT as part of state testing (in place of Smarter Balance). Because of this, we are working to better prepare students over time. Our plan is:

• 8^th grade: Students still take the Smarter Balance assessment
• Freshman year: Take the PreACT 8/9
• Sophomore year: Take the full ACT for the first time
• Junior year: Take the ACT again as part of the state requirement

The school covers the cost of the PreACT 8/9 and the ACT sophomore year so there is no cost to families. Junior year since it is a state requirement, the state pays for the ACT.

The school will receive their score reports that we will share with students, and we can absolutely share those with parents/guardians as well. We will use these results to help students understand their academic strengths and areas for growth, guide conversations around course selection and future planning, and continue building familiarity and confidence with standardized testing to help reduce anxiety over time. 

We’re really excited about this opportunity for students as it’s a great low-pressure way for them to get a feel for the ACT before it really counts!

Notes from Mrs Gassman

My name is Jayden Halsey, and I'm an assistant camp director for The South Dakota Wildlife Federation's [SDWF] youth conservation camp. 

For the last 61 years, SDWF has made this camp available to South Dakota teens to not only introduce them to the outdoors, but also to open wide the door to new hobbies, learn skills and trades for possible vocations in conservation and wildlife to preserve our state heritage!

This camp held in the Black Hills is about more than getting kids outside—it's about learning how to give back to their communities, too! Year after year, these kids end up building lifelong friendships with others from across the state, and it's so incredible to see.

Our organization, as a non-profit, is known as South Dakota Wildlife Federation Youth Conservation Camp. SDWF is an affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation, the largest conservation organization in the world. The close working relationship between the state and national organizations ensures effective, coordinated conservation action at all levels of government.

For over sixty-five years, SDWF has been leading the fight to protect the interests of South Dakota’s current and future outdoor sports enthusiasts.

This camp is just one small part of the greater mission of SDWF, but it is incredibly impactful to those who have attended in the past, and they have a BLAST!
