Tuesday, September 24th 2024-Orange Day

Sanborn Central Community,
We have decided to move our Sept. 30th JH/JV game and our Oct. 4th varsity game to Wessington Springs. Field conditions on the south end are not satisfactory to hold a game at this point, and our target date of the October 11th varsity game is still our goal. This is not the news we wished to share with our community. Our school events at Sanborn Central are very important to the community and students. We aim to continue to make progress on our field and holding football games at Sanborn Central is a priority.

Lunchroom News:
Sanborn Central School District uses the Offer versus Serve (OVS) system. This is a way to decrease food waste and give students greater flexibility in choosing what to eat for school breakfast or lunch.
Breakfast Requirements
  • Students must take at least three of the food items offered.
  • The three required food components for breakfast are Fruit & Vegetable, Grains, and Milk. A Meat/Meat Alternative is allowed as a substitution for a Grain component.
Lunch Requirements
  • Students must take at least three components in the required quantities.
  • Lunch consists of five food components: Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Meat/meat alternatives, and Fluid milk.
One selection must be at least 1/2 cup (total) from either the fruit or vegetable component.
Breakfast Offer vs. Served
Lunch Offer vs. Served

We can encourage students to take components such as protein, however it is not required, and we cannot force them to make those particular choices. Implementing these types of requirements to our program could cause the state and federal level to review our program and could result in the loss of funding for our program.

USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) published the final rule titled, Child Nutrition Programs: Meal Patterns Consistent With the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which is the next step in continuing the science-based improvement of school meals and other USDA child nutrition programs (CNP), as well as advancing USDA’s commitment to nutrition security. The changes are based on a comprehensive review of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, robust stakeholder input on the CNP meal patterns, and lessons learned from prior rulemakings.
