A Note From Mrs. Gassman
Dear Junior Parents and Guardians,
I would like to share an exciting leadership opportunity available to our junior students: South Dakota Girls State and South Dakota Boys State, both sponsored by the American Legion.
These are highly respected, week-long summer leadership programs that focus on citizenship, government, leadership skills, and civic engagement. Participation looks excellent on resumes and college applications and can also lead to scholarship opportunities. Students also gain the chance to meet new people from across the state and build lasting connections.
I spoke with juniors today about these opportunities. We are very fortunate that the Letcher American Legion and the Artesian American Legion have each agreed to sponsor:
- One female student to attend SD Girls State
- One male student to attend SD Boys State
The sponsorship covers the program cost; however, families are responsible for providing transportation to and from the program.
Program Details:
SD Girls State
- Location: University of South Dakota (USD), Vermillion, SD
- Dates: May 24–28 (Sunday–Thursday)
- Registration Deadline: March 1
- Students stay in a college dorm room with one roommate
- All meals are provided and held on campus
SD Boys State
- Location: Northern State University (NSU), Aberdeen, SD
- Dates: May 25–29 (Monday–Friday)
- Registration Deadline: May 1
- Students stay in a college dorm room with one roommate
- All meals are provided and held on campus
The junior girls were given a delegate pre-registration form to complete and return to me, if interested. The junior boys were given a flyer with a QR code that once scanned, will bring them to the online registration form to complete.
