Wednesday, February 7th 2024-Orange Day

This week, is for Mrs. Amundson! The positive sunshine roaming the hallways with that fantastic smile that tells us everything will be alright:) It's National School Counselor's week. She's the master listener, college prep planner, and wonderful person and teacher. We are so blessed to have you Mrs. A!

Happy National School Councilor Week!

We are urging parents to please keep their children home if they are showing signs of being sick. We are receiving reports of students suffering from Influenza B, strep throat, and stomach flu. Symptoms include: body aches, headache, sore throat, tiredness, coughing, and fever. Students are displaying different symptoms. We would like to be proactive and not have the ailments spread.

Last night final for the girls game-Parkston 55, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 51Liz Boschee led Sanborn/Central/Woonsocket with 24 points while Jaycee Baruth added seven points for the night. 

The boys also fell last night with a score of 75-64

If you would like to add a contribution to the family of Gary Goudy we are wrapping up our fundraising efforts. The student body pulled in $2,020.40. and we challenge the community to match 10% for a total of $202.04! Contact the school at 605-495-4183 to add to our total.

Tomorrow is "I hate winter" day with lunch provided by the SC Booster Club. Kids may dress in appropriate beach and summer attire.

There will be an assembly from 9:00-10:15 AM on the 21st of February at the Sanborn Central Gymnasium in Forestburg for grades 7-12th. HS/MS students from Sanborn Central and Woonsocket will attend with the teachers of that age group as well.  Lynn Riemer is an accomplished speaker and retired DEA agent who now educates parents, teens, and professionals on legal and illegal drugs. Community members are welcome to attend.
Lynn Reimer is an accomplished speaker, trainer and advocate on issues relating to substance abuse, Lynn is president of ACT on Drugs, Inc., a non-profit organization with a mission to educate parents, teens, and professionals about addictive and psychoactive substances, both legal and illegal, which are available in their community. She is a recognized expert in Methamphetamine, Manufacturing, Child Abuse, Parental Issues, Health Effects, and Contamination in many counties in Colorado. Lynn Riemer is also a Coauthor of the book "The Methamphetamine Crisis: Strategies to Save Addicts, Families, and Communities" by Greenwood Publishing.

Save the date-Sanborn Central will have early dismissal on Friday, February 23rd 16th at 12:30 and NO school on Monday, February 19th.

Boys State 2024
Ms. Amundson will be speaking with the juniors about the opportunity to apply for and attend Boys State. Boys State is an opportunity that allows students to understand the American system of government, appreciate the responsibilities of citizenship and learn fundamental principles of leadership. This year, Boys State will take place in Aberdeen, SD at Northern State University from May 27-May 31, 2024. They are now accepting applications through May 1st, 2024. Our local Artesian and Letcher American Legion Auxiliary's pick the candidates if there is more that one student who would like to attend.

Youth Trooper Academy - Juniors and Seniors:
On Tuesday, February 6th at 8:15 AM, Samantha Pulse from the SD Department of Public Safety - Highway Patrol will be coming to talk with juniors and seniors about the Youth Trooper Academy program that will be held this summer. We look forward to having our students hear about this opportunity.

Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Summer Camps applications are open
Applications are now open for incoming 7th and 8th graders to attend the Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Summer Camps. Applications are due March 31, so please help share the news with students and parents. You may find the Spread the News Promotional Toolkit useful, which includes a parent letter template and social graphics. These five-day career camps will allow students to explore exciting careers, meet professionals, and dive into hands-on activities that unleash creativity and ignite passion. Below are the camp dates and locations. Find the application form here. Each camp will accept 100 participants. As mentioned earlier, the deadline to apply is March 31. Students are expected to be notified of acceptance via email by mid-April 2024. If availability is limited at a particular site, preference will be given to students from school districts categorized as Title I or as having high absenteeism during COVID. The Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Summer Camps are a partnership of the South Dakota Board of Regents, South Dakota Technical Colleges, South Dakota businesses and industry, and the South Dakota Department of Education (DOE). Community 
February 10th join Artesian Fire Department in hosting a cancer benefit for Brad Zobel. Brad is a firefighter and the department secretary and has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that has spread to his liver.
Doors open at 4 with a 5:30 supper and auction. 
The meal will be a whole hog BBQ and a free will donation for Brad hosted by the Fire Department. A engraved Ruger 10-22 and a Henry .22 Magnum Lever Action will be on the gun raffle.

Sophie Kelly and Letcher Junior Post 93 Legion Auxiliary are collecting gently used shoes for Veterans again this year. A collection box is located outside the office.

Wednesday February 7th will be the next food pantry giveaway from 4-when boxes are gone at the Sanborn Co. Courthouse.
