HANSEN RETIRING AFTER 18 YEARS ON BOARD OF REGENTS:

One of the most distinguished tenures on the South Dakota Board of Regents began with a late-night telephone call.

Dr. James O. Hansen of Pierre retires after next week’s board meeting, having served 18 years as a Regent. His service began when former Governor Bill Janklow called him at 10:30 one evening, asking him to serve. Hansen calls being on the Regents for so long an honor.

Education at all levels has been a major part of Hansen’s life since he was growing up in Spearfish. He spent 39 years in K-12 schools first as a teacher and coach and then as a superintendent. Hansen started at Philip, before moving onto Wessington, Gregory, and Madison.

Hansen eventually came to Pierre where he was state superintendent of schools from 1979-1987 and then education secretary for Governors Janklow and George S. Mickelson in 1985-1990.  For all of his educational experiences, Hansen says he has enjoyed being on the Regents most of all.

Hansen says he believes education in South Dakota has been strong; but he says the students can never be forgotten or forced to pay too high of a financial burden to attend South Dakota universities.

While on the Regents, Hansen served as the board’s president, vice president and secretary. He worked with 22 institutional executives at the campus and special schools level, chaired three presidential search committees, and served on countless building committees for the regents.

Hansen says he never got tired of working with students.

Hansen, 84, says he will miss being on the Regents, but says it is time to do something else. Hansen says he hopes that he is remembered as a Regent “who made a difference.”
