Lunch Program News:
Breakfast Buddies Are Starting at Sanborn Central!
Beginning Monday, September 14, we will be starting a new Breakfast Buddies program during our morning breakfast time.
Students in grades 3–5 were given the opportunity to volunteer to be paired with one of our Pre-K or Kindergarten students. Each younger student will have an older “Breakfast Buddy” who will find them in the lunchroom each morning and spend that time with them.
Breakfast Buddies may help their little buddy through the breakfast line, open milk, cereal, juice or other breakfast items, sit with them while they eat, and help them learn how mornings in the lunchroom work. If a younger student chooses not to eat breakfast, their buddy will still sit with them during this time.
The goal is simply to give our youngest students a friendly, familiar face in what can sometimes be a busy morning environment. At the same time, our older students get the opportunity to practice kindness, responsibility, leadership and Blackhawk Pride.
A few things for families to know:
  • Pre-K and Kindergarten students do not have to eat breakfast to participate.
  • Older buddies are there to help, encourage and be a friend—not to be “in charge” of the younger student.
  • Students will not share food.
  • We know it may take a little time for everyone to get used to the new routine, and we will make adjustments as needed.
So, if your child comes home talking about their “Breakfast Buddy,” now you’ll know what they mean! We are excited to see the relationships that grow from this and hope it helps make mornings a little more comfortable for our littlest Blackhawks.

🍉🍇 Fresh Fruits & Vegetables Has Begun! 🍎🥕
We are excited to kick off our Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) today at Sanborn Central!
Our first FFVP snack is a fresh melon and grape cup. Students in Pre-K through 8th grade will have the opportunity to enjoy it this afternoon.
The FFVP is about much more than simply giving students an extra snack during the school day. Throughout the year, students will be introduced to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables—some they may already love and others they may have never tried before!
Through this program, we hope to:
Our FFVP snacks will be offered three days each week, with the days varying from week to week. We’ll be offering a mix of fruits and vegetables throughout the program, and occasionally students will also get to learn a little bit about what they are trying.
Tonight's question for your student:
“What did you think of the melon and grape cup?”
Ask them what kind of melon they tried, which fruit was their favorite, and whether there was anything in the cup they would like to have again at home.
We would love for FFVP to spark conversations at home, too. Even a simple “Did you try it?” can help encourage kids to be adventurous and give new foods a chance.
We can't wait to hear what the students think!

Notes from Mrs. Gassman
Sanborn Central students and families are invited to South Dakota Safety Days, a free community event in Plankinton on October 9 and 10, 2026, honoring the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs, paramedics, and 911 dispatchers who take care of our communities.

In November 2025, Aurora County became the first county in South Dakota to proclaim October as First Responders Appreciation Month. In January 2026, Governor Larry Rhoden signed a statewide proclamation extending that recognition to all 66 counties, crediting Aurora County for leading the way. South Dakota Safety Days is the community celebration that brings it to life.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10 is the big day for families. It runs from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Aurora County Ag Building in Plankinton. Admission and every activity are free.
Kids can climb through fire trucks, ambulances, and patrol vehicles, try hands-on fire extinguisher training, take Stop the Bleed training, and walk through the Avera Careflight mobile simulation. They can also take part in the firefighter games, There is a kids' table with coloring, art, and letters to first responders. Every child who joins a training, makes art, or plays in the firefighter games is entered in a prize drawing at 4:00 PM.

Food trucks will be on site all day, so families can buy lunch and stay as long as they like.

At 1:30 PM we hold the First Responders Awards Ceremony, where firefighters, EMTs, and law enforcement officers from around the county are honored by name.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9 has two things older students may be interested in.

A self-defense class runs 4:00 to 6:00 PM in the Plankinton School gym, taught by Shihan David Sheets of SoDak Kyokushin Karate. It is open to middle school students and older, costs $20 per person, and every participant receives a certificate of completion. Space is limited and registration is required:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-south-dakota-safety-days-self-defense-class-tickets-1997980672977

That evening we screen PTSD 9-1-1, a documentary about the mental health toll first responders carry. The film's director leads a panel discussion afterward, with Sheriff Roman Briggs among the panelists. Doors open at 6:30 PM at the Silo Market, 120 S Main St. The screening is free, but the film handles heavy material honestly, so it is for ages 16 and up. Registration is required:

If any of our students need community service hours, they are looking for volunteers on Saturday!
