Middle School Updates
For the week of September 1st

Notes from Mrs. Gassman and the PBIS Team
Freshman Impact in Alexandria, SD: Wednesday, September 10th (Myself & Kayla Olson-VanWinkle - Freshman Advisor) **freshmen will be gone all day (8:00-3:00; will most likely need to leave the school around 7:15 AM). We will take one of the school vans.

Scrubs Camp in Huron, SD: Wednesday, October 1 at 8:30 AM-3:00 PM (Myself) **any freshmen-seniors interested in the medical field (students TBD)

College & Career Fair in Mitchell, SD: Thursday, October 9th (all day) for Juniors and Seniors taken by myself and Mr. Steele - Senior Advisor) - We will make a whole day for this. Plan is for College Fair at DWU, campus tour of DWU, career fair at the fairgrounds, lunch, then end the day with a campus tour of MTC. We will plan to take one or both of the vans OR a van and the suburban.

District ACTWednesday, October 29th in Mr. Steele's room at 8:30 AM during the regular school day (any 10-12th grade students who would like to take the ACT - we are recommending juniors do not take the exam as they have to take the ACT in place of the smarter balance test in the spring) This will be online.

**Spring ACT - I will host a district ACT test for sophomores only - the school will pay for all sophomores - this will be online to prepare for students as the ACT that is required their junior year is with the online format.

**ACT testing in place of smarter balance testing will be separate from the sophomore test (no cost to students - paid by the state - online format) - more information to come (Spring 2026)

ASVABWednesday, November 5th at 8:15-11:00 AM (Mrs. Gassman's room) for ALL juniors + any seniors who would like to retake the ASVAB.

We will NOT have the seniors take the NCRC this school year. The state is now requiring schools to pay for this on their own, and we are finding the results to not be of much need or help for students.

Additionally, remember that juniors and seniors have two excused absences to go on college tours, career or college camps, etc each year, however, they do need to have their parents/guardians call the office and let Laura know they will be gone, and also need to inform their teachers when they will be absent.

The SC PBIS team is excited to expand its efforts this year by introducing the SOAR program. SOAR is an intervention-based program designed to provide additional support for students who may need it. Students may qualify for SOAR based on a variety of factors, including attendance concerns, academic struggles, behavioral challenges, or office referrals.

You can learn more about the SOAR program in the attached flier. If you do not want your child to participate in SOAR should they be referred and qualify, please complete the opt-out section and return it by Wednesday, August 27th. If your child has qualified, you will receive an email from one of our SOAR coordinators.

Forms have been sent home with all PreK-12 students. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about the SOAR program.

Help support our local FFA chapter by collecting box tops. Brochure
The WIX® Filters Box Top Program is an annual fundraising initiative where FFA chapters collect part-numbered box tops from WIX filters, and WIX donates $0.25 for each box top submitted to support their chapter's activities and agricultural education. To participate, FFA members and supporters collect box tops, which must be redeemed with a completed claim form by the April 15 deadline. The program is a long-standing partnership, with WIX providing significant funds to FFA chapters across the country and offering bonus awards for chapters submitting the most box tops.

There is street construction by the elementary school where both gyms are located.   The best way is to come into Wessington Springs on 383rd av from HWY 34 and go north to 2nd street and then west to elementary school.  Only entry is east side of complex.   Parking can be anywhere.  Entrances can be through Door B on west side of rec center or Door D on east side of rec center.   We ask that teams park busses, mini-busses or vans either right along rec center and elementary school on the loop right south of the school or east of the rec center and come through door D.
