Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Summer Camps applications are open
Applications are now open for incoming 7th and 8th graders to attend the Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Summer Camps. Applications are due March 31, so please help share the news with students and parents. You may find the Spread the News Promotional Toolkit useful, which includes a parent letter template and social graphics. These five-day career camps will allow students to explore exciting careers, meet professionals, and dive into hands-on activities that unleash creativity and ignite passion. Below are the camp dates and locations. Find the application form here. Each camp will accept 100 participants. As mentioned earlier, the deadline to apply is March 31. Students are expected to be notified of acceptance via email by mid-April 2024. If availability is limited at a particular site, preference will be given to students from school districts categorized as Title I or as having high absenteeism during COVID. The Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Summer Camps are a partnership of the South Dakota Board of Regents, South Dakota Technical Colleges, South Dakota businesses and industry, and the South Dakota Department of Education (DOE). The camps are funded with federal dollars available to DOE through the American Rescue Plan Act. Questions? Contact Molly Weisgram.
West Point’s Summer Leaders Experience (SLE)
At West Point we develop Leaders of Character, and we are looking for high-achieving young people who are in great standing with their school and community, and who want to challenge themselves. Please see the attached flyer to share with your students, educators, and parents!
What is SLE?
- SLE is a one-week program for current Juniors (High School Class of 2025) to visit West Point in June.
- Students in this program get to spend the week with our cadets, live in the barracks, and eat in the mess hall.
- Learn about West Point’s world class academics by trying 5 of our 17 academic workshops.
- Learn about military training and becoming a Leader of Character at West Point by completing two military days to include rappelling, Zodiac boats, combatives (like Jiu-Jitsu) training and more!
- Challenge themselves physically by attempting the Candidate Fitness Assessment, conducting physical training, and sports.
- Complete their admissions interview with a cadet.
- Spend the week making friends with other students from all over the US who are applying to West Point.
Students may sign up for this program now at westpoint.edu. Our priority application deadline for SLE is the following Friday on March 15th and we will accept applications until April 15th. SLE is competitive and not all who apply are offered to attend.

Minnesota reciprocity for SD students is not being renewed
This week, the SD Board of Regents shared the following statement:
The reciprocity agreement between SD and MN is not being renewed for academic year 2024 – 2025 and will begin winding down for students currently enrolled under the agreement. For students currently enrolled under the existing reciprocity agreement, the process for setting reciprocal rates will remain in effect as they work towards completion of their degree(s). New MN students enrolling at one of South Dakota’s public universities starting in Summer 2024 will receive the in-state SD rate, which is a cheaper rate than they would have received under the MN reciprocity agreement. New SD students looking to enroll at an institution in MN starting in Fall 2024 will be charged the rate set by MN for those students. SD has no part in setting rates for SD students attending MN institutions. For additional insight into this topic, see the below questions and responses. For questions on Minnesota tuition rates, please contact the specific institution, Minnesota State, or the University of Minnesota Board of Regents.
