VOTE TODAY!!!!

Just a reminder that today is school board election day for Sanborn Central School District registered voters.  Please exercise your right to vote!  A resolution was approved at the last school board meeting to discontinue school board representation areas and have all school board members be considered "at large" beginning July 1, 2016 pending approval by district voters on June 21, 2016 when there will be a school board election with two candidates, Justin Enfield and Melissa Ettswold.  Voting will take place TODAY from 7:00am - 7:00pm in the Commons at the school in Forestburg.  That entrance is the second set of doors on the east side of the building and are used to go into the gym, too, for events.  (The first set of doors is for the high school wing.)  Any registered voter in the Sanborn Central School District is eligible to vote.

Further explanation of the resolution:  When the Artesian-Letcher School District was formed in 1991 it was decided to have two board members from the old Artesian district, two from the old Letcher district, and one "at large".  At that time there were two sites with an enrollment of 361 students.  Artesian had K-4 and 9-12 and Letcher had K-4 and 5-8.  Over the years that changed and before we moved to Forestburg we had K-2 and 9-12 at Artesian and 3-8 at Letcher.  Currently Troy Olson and Clayton Dean represent the Artesian area, Justin Enfield and Curtis Adams represent the Letcher area, and Brenda Schmit is serving in the "at large" position.  The reason for the resolution is that we have been consolidated for 25 years now and have moved to one site in Forestburg and have been Sanborn Central for 12 years so is there really a need for area representation?  Another factor is that it is hard to find people willing to serve on the school board and it really limits candidates when the position is confined to one area or the other depending on which positions are open.  All terms are for three years.  For the first time in about 20 years we are having an election.  If one of those candidates was from the opposite area, they could not run for the position.  The ballot will look like this:
Shall the Sanborn Central School District discontinue school board representation
areas and have all school board members be considered "at large", commencing on July 1, 2016, be approved?

Check with a cross (X) or check mark ( ) on the line desired.

__________ Against Resolution to Discontinue Representation                                                            Areas.

June 14, 2016

Next week, June 21st, our school district will be performing an election for an open seat on the Sanborn Central School District's Board of Education.  With this in mind, the two candidates will be providing the voting public with some background information, in the event that they may not be well known, if at all, to some voters.  Today, Melissa Ettswold and Justin Enfield, who is the incumbent member, would like to introduce themselves to the public (Mr. Enfield's answers are in RED and Mrs. Ettswold's answers are in BLUE):

Please tell the voters a little bit about yourself (where you live, family, ect..)

My name is Justin Enfield.  I currently live in Letcher with my fiancĂ©e Sarah and my daughters Beau and Vada.  They are not school age yet, but they will be attending SC when they are.

My name is Melissa Ettswold and I live in Letcher with my husband Andy and two sons, Parker (8) and Wyatt (3).  Parker will be a 3rd grader at Sanborn Central in the fall.

Please inform the voters of your education background, including where you went to high school and any post-secondary attendance.

I graduated from the Artesian-Letcher School District in 2003.  I also attended South Dakota State University and received a degree in Economics and Agriculture.

I graduated from Iroquois High School and received an associate of applied science degree from Mitchell Technical Institute.

Why are you running for a seat on the Sanborn Central School Board?

As a former student and teacher in the district as well as future parent of students in the district, I feel very strongly about doing my part to ensure that all students have the best possible opportunities and experiences that will carry them to successful lives during their time here at SC and beyond.

I chose to run for the school board because I'm proud of our children, communities, and school and want to continue to help them grown and improve to meet the future needs.

What are some areas where your position on the board would prove to be helpful to the staff, students, and community of the district?

I have a passion for all extra curricular activities.  I believe they are an important part of a well-rounded education.  I want to do what I can to ensure that the students of SC are always offered the opportunity to participate in activities both inside and outside the classroom.  I am also a huge advocate for providing a quality educational experience in the small-school setting.  With the technological abilities of our district, students do not have to attend a large school to take specific classes.

I feel that our children’s education is paramount and this needs to be a number one priority.  In order to make sure our children education is priority we need to make sure our staff are also taken care of.  Without our staff and faculty our students will not receive the education they need for their future.

Discuss the strengths you see in the district as well as the areas that you feel could be improved.

The strength of school comes from the dedicated staff.  They all work very hard to make sure SC is a great place for students to learn.  An area that I would like to see the district work on is the idea of improving enrollment.  It is important that we make every attempt to maintain the student population that is currently enrolled.  I would like to find new ways to attract and entice families to move into the district as well as work to get families who do live in the district to send their children to SC as opposed to other districts.

Things are going great in the district, we just need to make sure we are staying on top of everything from budget to education.  There are always little changes that can/may be needed and we can deal with those items as they approach.

Good luck to Sanborn Central students that will be competing in the JH National Finals Rodeo in Tennessee June 19-25!  You can follow them on this website:
