August 13, 2014

From Mrs. Whitney:  The school board and I would like our patrons and friends to know what has happened over the past 10 years with our food service program in regards to fund balances.  Before we moved to Forestburg it was common practice to have to supplement the budget with General Fund dollars due in part to the fact that we had two programs, one in each building plus we had the program at Upland Colony. Since the Healthy Foods Act that began in 2012-13 (thanks to Michelle Obama and Congress) our food service has gone steadily in the hole with Upland Colony dropping out because of the regulations and mounds of paperwork. This month the school board had to supplement the Food Service account with General Fund dollars for the first time since we've moved to this building.  Here is the fund balance at the end of July since 2004 when the fund was last supplemented before we moved to Forestburg:
Food Service Fund
July 31
2014
($9,079.26)
2013
$16,287.69
2012
$41,742.13
2011
$40,334.90
2010
$33,115.94
2009
$34,875.89
2008
$46,929.90
2007
$51,697.47
2006
$49,019.73
2005
$41,764.01
2004
$34,284.53

Buying fresh fruits and vegetables and having to put them on the student's trays only to be thrown away is very expensive.  Taking money from the General Fund to supplement the food service account takes money away from our other operating expenses. Contact  Senator Tim Johnson at 1-800-537-0025, Senator Thune at 1-866-850-3855, or Representative Kristi Noem at 1-855-225-2801 to voice your concerns and let them know how you feel about the Healthy Foods Act.

Sanborn County was well represented at the State 4-H Horse Show on July 24. Maddie Moody received Grand Champion in Junior Horse Pole Bending. Austin Schmit received Reserve Champion in Junior Pony Barrels and also received fourth in the Junior Pony Pole Bending.  Cayden Slykhuis  placed fourth in Junior Horse Barrels.
