Today our highlight is Ms. Knigge, our middle grade teacher at Upland Colony for the past 13 years.  Ms. Knigge graduated from Mt. Vernon High School, Dakota State, and DWU.  Even though she appears to have stayed close to home she has traveled to Japan, the Bahamas, Florida, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Idaho, Nevada, North Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas before she turned 35 years old. Unfortunately, her ability to travel took a curve and she hasn’t been on a vacation since.  Ms. Knigge loves little kids and watching them grow and learn. Seeing their faces light up when they accomplish a task that they have worked so hard at is just heart-warming to her.  She wants to make a difference!  Each day Ms. Knigge looks forward to teaching young children as she doesn’t find it boring - You never know what they are going to say or do next and she looks forward to watching them succeed in new tasks or goals.  Ms Knigge we are so happy to have you on our Sanborn Central team!

Kingsbury’s will be headed to Rochester on Monday, March 3rd.  If you have any pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, please bring them to school before Friday!

Girls are at Woonsocket and Boys at SC today.

In Girls District Semi-Final action last night the final score was Blackhawks 77 Wolsey-Wessington 31. GO BLACKHAWKS!

Mrs. Danek, another 10 year teacher, is Sanborn Central’s highlighted person today. Mrs. Danek graduated from Sioux Falls Lincoln and the University of Sioux Falls (when it was still Sioux Falls College). Today she teaches Language Arts in our high school. She has actually been teaching for many years - from the time she was a little girl and could arrange her dolls to be her students so she could “teach” them.  Mrs. Danek has an extensive cookbook collection as well as owning every book written by JD Robb.  She has made the adjustment from being a “Big City Girl” to small town life quite well as her favorite means of transportation is the golf cart when the weather cooperates.  Each and every day Mrs. Danek looks forward to seeing the “light bulb” of understanding appearing on a student’s face!   Mrs. Danek – thank you for being a member of our Rebel Family!

There will be a pep rally on Thursday, February 27th, for the Girls District Final game at 2:45PM-3:00PM in the Woonsocket Gym.  Players, coaches, and cheerleaders will leave at 2:30 from here.  Mr. Kroeger and Ms. Wenzel will also be leaving early.  Any others attending must have parent permission.

History was a trash bag of random coincidences torn open in a wind.  Surely, Watt with his steam engine, Faraday with his electric motor, and Edison with his incandescent light bulb did not have it as their goal to contribute to a fuel shortage some day that would place their countries at the mercy of Arab oil.  ~Joseph Heller, Good as Gold

Today the varsity Ladies play in the district tournament at the Huron Arena against Wolsey/Wessington at 4:00 pm.  The bus will leave here at 2:25.  It’s a great day for a Blackhawk Victory.  If you aren’t making the trip – tune in to KOKK for live coverage.  http://www.performance-radio.com/kokk/

Orange Day
Tutoring tonight as well as homework club!

We welcome Amberiah Smith to our Junior Class and Zsakiah Smith to our 6th grade class today.

Girls are at Sanborn Central, Boys at Woonsocket, and Cheerleaders at Woonsocket today.

There will be HS CCD at St. Charles in artesian tonight at 7:00 pm

Congratulations to the students who represented Sanborn Central at the Region V Vocal Music Contest. The girls ensemble – Breanne Brandenburg, Morgan Selland, Jessica Schmit, Lorrie Eppe, Tamra Mann and Claudia Miller received a superior placing, as did soloists Morgan Selland and Tamra Mann.  Though Tyler Johnson’s point total was just shy of a superior rating, we are extremely proud of his solo performance.

The Blackhawk Boys BB team lost to #1 rated James Valley Christian by a score of 77-66 in Huron last night.  Helping the cause:  Davion-13 pts & 5 reb, Dillon-9 pts & 8 reb, Tyler- 13 pts, Tucker-13 pts & 7 assists, Jalen-3 pts, Josh- 6 pts, Brady-9 pts & 5 reb, Jaedyn-4 reb.  We shot 26-62 42% FG, 6-9 67% FT , SCW rebound advantage 34-24. JVC shot 60% FG in 1st half and 54% for the game.  Coach Olson’s comments: JVC came out firing and really set us back. We knew they would probably shoot well in their gym but we tried rushing our shots which didn’t force them to play defense for very long. We thought we were still in striking distance at halftime and just needed to focus on making stops.  We did accomplish that but too many unforced turnovers didn’t allow us to make a serious comeback.

The boys finished the tough 281 Conference in 2nd place with  this being their only loss. Our next action is Thursday vs Mitchell Christian.  If we can win this game the boys will be undefeated in the CBH Conference and win it for the first time in 26 years.

Today we will highlight band instructor, Mr. Kroeger, a SDSU graduate after completing high school in Parkston.  He saw the opportunities that his director, Danny Eye, gave to small town schools and wanted to be able to encourage musicians to do the same.  Mr. Kroeger looks forward to seeing students succeed at music.  The “AHA!” moment when the student knows they get it is priceless!  Mr. Kroeger is the only left handed person in his family for an unknown amount of generations.  As a 6 day old infant, Mr. Kroeger was in a car fire.  He is currently working on his masters degree for music education at Northern State University. Mr. Kroeger, we thank you for bringing the beat of the drums to Sanborn Central’s music program these past two years!

The MS Updates for this week have been uploaded to our Google Drive.

Blue Day – Tutoring today

It’s “I Hate Winter Day” at Sanborn Central.  HS students will enjoy Summer Olympics at 2:45.  Students in grades 6-12 will be able to buy root beer floats for $1 at 3:00 in the concession stand.

Congratulations to Shelby Selland for being selected as a state finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.  She was one of 10 girls selected in South Dakota.  The Wendy’s High School Heisman rewards outstanding students that not only out perform their competition in sports but strive for the highest standards of excellence in all they do.  She was awarded a bronze medal, a Heisman patch, and a gift certificate from Wendy’s.

Don’t forget to tune in to KSFY tonight for the 6:00PM news and again on the KSFY morning news on Friday, February 14 between 6:00AM and 7:00AM to see the interview with Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week – Shelby Selland!

Book Fair purchases can be made from 8:15-8:45, 10:30-11:00, and 2:45-3:15 today.

Our highlight today is Mr. Harless who for the past two years has taught the upper grades at Upland Colony. Mr. Harless is a graduate of Plankinton High.  He started his road to adulthood by graduating from USD/Springfield (1 year before its closing) with a degree in auto mechanics.  He was a volunteer fire fighter who had the roll of fire prevention instructor with the Plankinton School District.  This volunteer roll led him to become a substitute teacher inspiring him to start college again while in his 30’s to get a teaching degree. Due to the fact that he teaches at a Hutterite Colony, he gets to experience the culture differences.  He enjoys taking students on that journey from the unknown to the known, as well as the busy atmosphere of teaching in a multi grade classroom – there is always something to do and never a dull moment.  Mr. Harless, we thank you for agreeing to be part of Sanborn Central’s education of the Upland Colony students!

We will mail MS Updates and letters to parents whose students have a failing grade as normal.  The MS Homework Club notifications and progress reports (D average) for students in grades 6-12 that are not picked up at conference time will go in the mail Friday afternoon.  MS Students with missing assignments will be given their slips prior to the “I Hate Winter” party this afternoon.

Please turn in your Coborn's receipts for the months of November, December, and January by February 13th.

The gift shop is open from 8am until 6pm until Valentine’s Day! For Valentine’s Day they will be delivering to Sanborn Central and the Woonsocket School on Thursday Feb. 13th since there is no school on Friday Feb. 14th. They have an assortment of candy bouquets, mixed flower bouquets, roses, Mylar balloons, cards and stuffed animals for every price range. Call 796-4467 or stop by PVCC! They can take debit or credit cards as well!

Ms. Senska, Jessica, Morgan, Tamra, Breanne, Lorrie, Claudia, and Tyler are gone to the Vocal Contest in Kimball today. During HS Vocal time, seniors will have privileges, boys will report to Mrs. T Moody and girls to Ms. Fox.

Today we are highlighting Mr. Gross who is a 2nd year teacher at Sanborn Central.  Mr. Gross is a graduate of SDSU and Hitchcock – Tulare.  During his high school years his mother was very encouraging in all endeavors except Ag or FFA!  Mr. Gross looks forward to each and every day spent at SC as he enjoys the variety of topics and learning styles ag incorporates.  In a given day, he can go from talking about crop production, to woodworking, to proper animal nutrition, to welding, and wrap it all up with farm balance sheets.  Teaching was Mr. Gross’ chosen career because he loves working with students and seeing them learn and gain understanding over time.  We are very pleased that Mr. Gross accepted the challenging position of Ag Teacher at Sanborn Central!

Girls are at Woonsocket and boys at SC today.

Blue Day

Good luck to the JH and JV teams as they travel to Corsica for games today.  The schedule is JV Boys in the HS gym and JHG in the grade school gym at 5:00.  The JH Boys play in the grade school gym and the JVG in the HS gym at 6:00.  The bus will leave SC at 3:30.

A huge thank you to the juniors that brought goodies yesterday and those that have been great workers at the ball games.  Your help is greatly appreciated!!  Mrs. Moody and Mr. Flatten

The Blackhawk Boys BB team defeated Corsica-Stickney last night in a thriller 70-69. Helping the cause:  Jaedyn - 2pt & 3 steal, Davion-15 pt & 7 reb, Dillon-15 pt, Tyler-15 pt, Tucker-13 pt, Jarid-3 pt, Brady- 7 pt.  FG 24-42 for 57%   FT 15-21 for 72% out rebounded them 19-17.  Coach Olson’s comments: “We seemed mentally tired the first part of the game, making fouls, turnovers, and offensive mistakes that we haven’t been doing lately.  Corsica-Stickney executes their stuff extremely well and they have shooters all over the floor. They shot 60% for the game. It’s a credit to our boys though that they didn’t hang their heads.  Good teams and good kids continue to battle and compete and find a way to win at the end.”  The boys record is now at 12-2 and play Wolsey-Wessington Saturday.

The Varsity Gals also defeated Corsica-Stickney 73-43   Leaders: Shelby Selland - 27 points and 4 rebounds; Morgan Selland  13 points; Myah Selland  8 points and 10 assists; Rachel Selland 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and assists; and Marissa Weber 8 points and 5 assists.

Our highlighted teacher today is Mr. Flatten a 2003 graduate of Clark High School who continued his education at Minnesota State University (Moorhead).  In the past he enjoyed working a variety of jobs and didn’t think he wanted to specialize in one profession that didn’t provide an abundance of variety.  He already had a vast knowledge of history and decided that sharing it with others is what he wanted to do.  Mr. Flatten looks forward to coming to Sanborn Central every day to interact with the students.  He enjoys their energy and curiosity and believes that is what keeps him motivated to continue to develop as a teacher.  Mr. Flatten has an unhealthy fascination with Sasquatch or so he has been told. He does think he could live off of a strictly meat diet. He tries to tell us that in school he may appear to be energetic and outgoing, but is actually quiet and reserved out of the classroom. Mr. Flatten has been at Sanborn Central for 2 years and we are so glad that he has chosen to be part of our team!

If you are unable to drive to Wolsey tomorrow for Blackhawk basketball – tune in to Santel Channel 102.
