Blue Day

This week is School Board Recognition Week.  Our children benefit every day from the leadership of our local school board.  Today we will highlight Troy Olson, a 10 year member of the board.  Troy graduated from Artesian High School where he played trombone in band, for some reason he believes the director, Mrs. Whitney, destroyed the trombone after he graduated.  He also attended SD School of Mines and SDSU. Currently Troy farms when he’s not reading L’Amour books (over 140 read thus far). Troy has always been excited in helping educate young minds - he gets great satisfaction in seeing our students succeed and knowing that he had a small part in it. Troy would like to continue allowing our students to have the tools needed to keep up with the ever-changing technologies of today as well as have the building debt paid off early.  Something Troy sees as a huge accomplishment during his time on the board was helping to get all students under one roof and seeing the district band together throughout the building process.  Troy, we thank you for making the commitment to serve Sanborn Central students, staff, and patrons!

Great job Blackhawks on your victories last night.  From Coach Dean - The JV Girls Blackhawks defeated Kimball/White Lake 37-30. Leading the Blackhawks was Tayla Weber with 21 points. Abby Doering grabbed 6 boards. Bailey Moody had 4 assist and 3 steals.  The Blackhawk Boys Varsity BB team defeated conference foe Kimball- White Lake last night by a score of 78-59 to stay undefeated at 6-0. Helping the cause was Dillon Moore scoring 17 points, Brady Tiede with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyler Krueger with 10 points. We were 34/61 from the floor for 56%.  The JV team won 46-27.  Coach Olson’s comments: It was a good win for the boys.  We weren’t as focused as we would have liked to be, especially on the defensive end, but the boys continued to play hard and came out with the victory.

Girls are at Woonsocket and Boys at Sanborn Central today.

There will be NO Junior High Boys practice on Friday of this week.

Do you know about  Monsanto’s Keep Rural Schools GROWING program  which is open for nominations. Farmers in the area need to nominate our school and then the school completes the paperwork that results from the nomination(s).  SD Schools have been awarded several $10,000 and $25,000 awards in the past. From 2013 the following were award recipients (according to their website):  $10,000 Recipients - Freeman School District 33-1, Hutchinson County; Hamlin School District 28-3, Hamlin County; Leola School District, McPherson County; Miller School District 29-4, Hand County; Parkston School District 33-3, Hutchinson County; Sioux Valley School District 05-5, Brookings County; and $25,000 Recipient Kimball School District, Brule County. Looks like a great opportunity to help a school!

Huron Arena
281 Conference Pink Night
Let’s get the entire arena covered in pink!

From South Dakota Voices for Children:  I write as we at SDVC are putting together our upcoming Children’s Day at the Capitol on February 4. One of the aspects of Children’s Day is to have some display items emphasizing children. We are developing banners featuring children from across SD to emphasize the diversity found in our children and that all communities must address the needs of children. I write to ask if any of your families are headed toward Sioux Falls in the days ahead and would be willing to have their son or daughter (ages birth to 18) be photographed to be used in the banner. The banner would read something like “Greg B, age 14, Artesian”.  If you know of someone who might be interested to contact me directly. Thanks for your help. Look forward to seeing you in 2014.
