On Friday, the Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks earned their first win of season with an exciting 28-22 overtime victory over Mt. Vernon/Plankinton.    Mt. Vernon/Plankinton opened the scoring in first quarter  and held a 6-0 after 1 quarter.  Late in 2nd quarter, Mt. Vernon/Plankinton added to that lead with a TD and 2 point conversion and lead 14-0 with 30 seconds to go in the half.  The Blackhawks however were able to strike with 17 seconds left in half on a 57 yard TD pass from Joe Davis to Austin Messmer.  The Blackhawks got the ball to start the 3rd quarter and 2 minutes into the half Austin Messmer scored on a 54 yard TD run.  The score became tied when Tucker Kingsbury hit Brady Teide for 2 point conversion.  The score remained tied at end of 3rd quarter.  Early in 4th quarter Mt. Vernon/Plankinton struck again and took a 22-14 lead.  The Blackhawks then put together a good drive running the ball that ended with Tucker Kingsbury sneaking into end zone on a 2 yd run.  Austin Messmer ran in the 2 point conversion to tie the game once again at 22.  Late in 4th quarter Mt. Vernon/Plankinton drove the ball to the Blackhawk 5 yd line and were threatening to take lead with under 2 minutes left.   However, Austin Messmer intercepted a pass in end zone to keep the score tied and the game went into overtime.   In overtime, Mt. Vernon/Plankinton had ball first, but fumbled to the Blackhawks on their 2nd play.  The Blackhawks were only able to get 4 yards on their first 3 plays in OT.  On 4th down from the 6 yard line Joe Davis hit Jacob Fouberg in corner of endzone for the Blackhawk victory.   Offensively, Joe Davis was 6 for 6 passing for 83 yards and 2 TDs.  Austin Messmer ran for 94 yards on 11 carries and Tucker Kingsbury ran for 50 yards on 14 carries. Defensively, Austin Messmer had 10 tackles.  Next action for Blackhawks is September 20th when they play Sunshine Bible Academy in Forestburg at 7:00 pm.

The 7th/8th football team will no longer have practices on Wednesdays.  We were not sure how many students would be involved with church activities on Wednesdays after school, but have found out there will be quite a few involved starting this week.  Therefore, we have made the decision to not have practice for 7th and 8th graders on Wednesdays. Thanks Coach Kolousek

Students who are caught displaying exceptional traits of the 6 pillars – Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship – will be awarded with a certificate.  Bring it to the office to get your name on our character board.  Staff – if you need more tickets, extras will be in the workroom.

These workouts run for 6 weeks focused on the individual skill development and are progression based so each athlete will be challenged to improve their game.  We have scheduled workouts in the evening and weekends to avoid conflicts with others sports, and give athletes the opportunity to work on their basketball skills.  Flyers can be found on the Sanborn Central Website – Forms & Publications – in the athletic folder.  Additional workout flyers for athletes in K-6 are available on the website.  www.WarwickWorkouts.com
